About us
The Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA), founded in 1955, has grown from a small group of dedicated orthopaedic surgeons into one of India's largest professional medical organizations, with more than 18,000 active life members.
Over the following decades, the Association expanded its academic and professional activities through annual conferences, scientific meetings, travelling fellowships, memorial orations, and the publication of the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics. Major milestones included the institution of the Kini Memorial Oration in 1958, the publication of the first issue of the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics in 1967, the adoption of the Association's Constitution in the same year, and the launch of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Programme during the Silver Jubilee Conference held in Bombay in 1980.
Today, the IOA is the premier national organization representing orthopaedic surgeons in India. It is widely recognized for its annual conference (IOACON), Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes, fellowships, instructional courses, regional chapters, the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics (IJO), and its significant contributions to the advancement of orthopaedic education, research, and clinical practice. Its history reflects steady institutional growth, a strong commitment to academic excellence, and a continuing leadership role in shaping the future of orthopaedics in India.
